What is autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates, relates to other people and how they make sense of the world around them. The term “spectrum” refers to the wide range of symptoms, skills, and levels of impairment or disability that children with autism can have. Some children are mildly impaired by their symptoms, while others are severely disabled. While all people with autism share certain difficulties, their condition will affect them in different ways.
